Not rare: Typically the infection rate for a total knee or hip replacement is about 2%. This is relatively low as complications go but if you are one who sustains this you are in for longterm IV antibiotics and several future surgeries for the infection and possibly replacement of the prosthesis.

There are numerous steps taken to reduce the risk of infection, including administration of antibiotics, strict adherence to sterile technique and appropriate management of pre-operative patient factors that can increase increase the risk of infection. Talk to your orthopaedic surgeon about your concerns specifically.
