Common lay term: The term superbug is more a produce of the media than a medical one. Within a decade of the first use of penicillin, strains of staph that had previously been susceptible had developed resistance. Today the term "multiply resistant" is commonly applied to a variety of germs that are no longer killed off by regular antibiotics.
