A member asked:

Why is the mandible more susceptible to osteomyelitis than other bones?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Connected to mouth: The mandible is the lower jaw bone and serves as the insertion for the lower teeth. Periodontal disease, cavities and abscesses can introduce bacteria into the mandible. Once bacteria make it into the bone, an infection can become established. Osteomyelitis is treated with antibiotic to kill the bacteria and surgery to remove dead and infected bone.
