Asap: If you're not seeing your dentist regulary, then you should go as soon as you have broken tooth/pain/"hole"/or any concern that you may have a cavity. Often, cavities are not even noticable when they're small, by the time a patient notices, they can be quite sizable.

As soon as possible: A cavity is bacteria that has gotten into a weakened part of enamel. Under the enamel is a softer layer of tooth called dentin. Once a cavity gets into the dentin it progresses very fast. If a cavity doesnt get taken care of, it will just get deeper and larger until it reaches the nerve and will cause the tooth to die, cause pain and swelling. Fixing it will then require a root canal or extrac.
