GFR: Kidney function is the determinant of stage of kidney failure. The GFR can be dteremined by measuring serum creatinine and using a formula to determine egfr. A more accurate measure involved 24 hour urine collection useful in extremes of age or body mass. Stage 1- GFR 90+ but with other signs of kidney failure stage 2- 60-89 stage 3a- 45-59 stge 3b- 30-44 stage 4- 16-29 stage 5- 15 or less.

Ask your doctor: Kidney disease stage is primarily determined by estimated glomerular filtration rate. This is calculated from lab studies using one of several equations. Your doctor may prefer one method for estimation, and s/he will be able to tell you how your function level is calculated.
