What is mitral stenosis?

Narrowing : Mitral stenosis is a narrowing of the valve that controls the flow of blood from the left atrium to the left ventricle of the heart. This can have many causes and, depending upon the severity of the stenosis, may or may not cause symptoms. This must be followed, because the degree of stenosis can increase over time and require replacement.

Mitral valve: The mitral valve has to open properly to let blood flow into the left ventricle from the atrium. If it doesn't, we call this stenosis. It has to close to keep the blood flowing toward the body, if it doesn't we call this regurgitation or insufficiency. Either or both problems can exist with the valve if its abnormal. Insufficiency is more common.

Valve tightening: This is a situation where the mitral valve is tight, producing some restriction to blood flowing through.It can either be something a person is born with or something that is caused by disease.
