Not usually: Most mitral stenosis is not inherited and is a result of rheumatic fever but rarely it is congenital, that is you are born with it. One form of congenital mitral stenosis includes an atrial septal defect and is called lutembacher's syndrome. It was described by rene lutembacher.

Some of the congenital causes of mitral stenosis include parachute mitral valve (the strings that tether the valves are attached to one papillary muscle instead of two), double orifice mitral valve where instead of one large opening it has two small openings, small rim of the valve known as hypoplasia of the annulus and congenital thickening/fusion.
