A virus: Molluscum contagiosum is caused by a virus. It is a common childhood infection. Children with eczema/atopic dermatitis are more prone to getting molluscum bumps. It is contagious, and most children get it from other kids. In adults it commonly occurs in the genital region as an std. Physicians treat molluscum with prescription creams, manual extraction, and/or freezing.
