Treatment/Evaluation: Swelling in the knee usually represents some type of injury either as a result of trauma or a disease process like arthritis or gout. Ice and elevation will help. If there are no contraindications then an anti inflammatory medicine like advil or aleve (naproxen) may also help. It is important to have the knee evaluated to determine the cause of swelling as this often means that there is cartilage injury.
