Start medication: Intranasal steroids, such as nasonex, (mometasone) have been demonstrated to prevent nasal allergies if started a few weeks before the season. Although most antihistamines work within 1 hour, starting a once a day antihistamine (claritin, allegra, zyrtec, etc.) a week or so before the pollen season will produce a steady state level. Obtaining an air-conditioner or hepa filter can keep pollen out of the home.

Start early: If you suffer from seasonal allergies, starting allergy medications before the season starts can result in much better control of symptoms. For nasal steroid sprays this means starting a few days to a week before pollen is blowing around. Antihistamines only take a couple of hours to start working.
