Do repeat infections tend to be more severe than the original disease or are they sometimes less severe?

Depends: It can go either way. The first outbreak of herpes is the most severe, but a second dengue infection is worse than the first. It depends in part on whether the antibodies are helping or hurting. They help more often than they hurt.
