Prevention: This is most likely for prevention. It is known that deficits of Folic Acid lead to neural tube defects like spina bifida (failure of the spinal column to close during the first few days to weeks of pregnancy). This is present in prenatal vitamins and many fortified foods.

Folic Acid: Even if your pregnancy test was negative on the first day of a missed period, if you are pregnant it may show on a later pregnancy test. Folic acid is used prior to & during pregnancy to prevent development of neural tube defects. If you desire to have children, starting use of Folic Acid early is helpful.
