Sore throat pain med: It is important to treat strep throats with antibiotics, and complete the entire course prescribed. Once the antibiotic is started, the pain usually improves quickly, in 1-2 days. During that time, the pain and fever usually respond to naproxen, Ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Gargling warm salt water or with a prescription combination of benadryl, (diphenhydramine) maalox and Lidocaine helps too. Lozenges may also aid.
