One day: Claritin (loratadine) 10 mg pill is dosed once daily. That's because it's effect will last about 24 hours, after that it's antihistamine effect wanes. However, Claritin is metabolized by the liver into another active compound called desloratadine, so the antihistamine effect can last a while. This is why most allergists have patients stop their Claritin a number of days before skin testing them.

8x5=40 hours: The half life of Loratadine is 8 hours. Usually it takes 5-6 half lives to be fully metabolized and "cleared" from your body so that is 40-48 hours.

Loratidine: The average half-life of loratidine (claritin) is about 8 hours. This means almost 90% of the drug is out of your system 24 hours after taking it (on average).
