Immune globulin shot: Active immunity results when exposure to a disease organism or a vaccine triggers the immune system to produce antibodies to that disease. Passive immunity is provided when a person is given antibodies to a disease (through an injection of immune globulin) rather than producing antibodies through his own immune system. Before birth, a baby gets passive immunity (antibodies) through the placenta.
