Newborn skin: There are several reasons. First, the fetus is covered with a "wax" that prevents maceration from amniotic fluid. This softens skin. Second, the newborn skin has not been subjected to any environmental insults, such as sunlight, abrasion, or injury. Third, the high levels of maternal Estrogens act to keep skin soft and supple.
