Anxiety & tension: When a person is anxious, muscles unconsciously tighten -- including muscles around the chest. This leads to a sensation of dyspnea (difficulty breathing) or that you can't get a deep enough breath. Anxiety also leads to more rapid, shallow breathing, resulting in physiologic changes like lower blood co2 and others, that perpetuate the anxiety ->rapid breathing ->more anxiety cycle.
