Pus in lung? what is the difference between empyema and pyothorax?

Pus: Pus in the pleural space (between the lung and the lining of the lung) is empyema. Pyothorax is pus anywhere in the thorax but for all practical purposes it is usually the same as an empyema. Pus in the lung is pneumonia.

Same difference: Empyema is a severe infection in the chest in which pus accumulates within the pleural space. Also known as pleural empyema, empyema thoracis and pyothorax. It will often develop as a consequence of a pneumonia. A fluid collection forms (parapneumonic effusion) and this fluid becomes infected.
