Many: Esophagitis can lead to ulcers with pain and bleeding, strictures which can result in serious swallowing problems and lead to an increased risk of cancer. About 10% of adults with gerd will get barrett's esophagus, a change in the lining of the swallowing tube which is associated with an increased risk of cancer.
