Not related : Respiratory quotient is a number derived from the equation - amount of carbon dioxide produced divided by amount of oxygen consumed. It is used in some equations to calculate basal metabolic rate and is helpful in pulmonary exercise testing . As such it does not affect an individual's lung function in any manner. Some patients with COPD during hospitalization are put on a low carbohydrate diet.
