Disc herniation: With normal aging, the intervertebral discs slowly degenerate with loss of fluid or hydration. These natural changes combined with weakening of the outer covering of the discs provides the mechanism for development of a disc herniation. The strength of the discs and alignment of the spine are genetically determined and also plays a parts in the process.
