Infection;loosening: Loosening either because of infection and or other causes are the most common causes. Blood clots are other major complications one worries about. Fortunately these occur in less than 25 of patients.

Short and long-term: Anesthesia reactions including heart attack, stroke, allergy, etc. Infections, early about 1% of the time, and possibility of late infections years later. Blood clots and pulmonary embolus. Blood loss, only 5-10% will need transfusion. Persistent pain, swelling, and stiffness. 95% of patients have good to excellent results 3 months after their replacement. Late failure of implant from wear.
