GI Sx, hit lifestyle: Can cause pain, bloat, diarrhea, constipation. Might impact lifestyle, interactions at home, work. Generally does not cause weight loss, bleeding, anemia, or problems outside the gut, e.g. Eye, skin, joint, liver problems as may occur with ibd. No increased risk of cancer, as there is with ibd. Generally no need for surgery.

Essentially None: Ibs is a funtional disorder of the bowel and there are really no life limiting issues here. I think that we can call it a life-miserating condition as compared to a life-limiting condition. The importance of making the diagnosis of ibs is in the elimination of structural and potentially life threatening issues. Thus, radiographic imaging, egd, and colonoscopy are often part of the work up.
