No: Irritable bowel syndrome is not a life-threatening condition and cannot result in cancer or serious intestinal disease. New studies are indicating the connection between irritable bowel causing the gut to be leaky and worsening hypertension, creates atrial fibrillation over long run.

Only if the : Diagnosis of ibs is wrong and you have a much more comple problem that may mimic the symptoms of ibs. Ibs is a diagnosis that should be made after all other more serious diagnoses are eliminated.
