Spinal inflammation: Spondylitis is a generic term for spine infl;ammation. It tends to be inherited. Major forms of spondylitis can be associated with specific genes, primarily b27, but also b40. Psoriatic arthritis can also cause spondylitis. Sacroiliitis is usually the first manifestation of "spondylitis.".

Spondylitis: An inflammatory condition of the spine. Can be related to the rheumatoid-like conditions, or colitis. Usually causes pain and gradual stiffening of spine in the ankylosing variety. Examples: ankylosing spondylitis, seonegative spondyloarthropathy. Infection also causes spondylitis having a different appearance and symptoms.
