Various ways: Most heal by themselves, but may require numbing cream, diet modification, less straining, less time sitting on toilet or even surgery. http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/hemorrhoids/basics/definition/con-20029852

A 30-year-old male asked:

How long do external hemorrhoids take to heal?

1 doctor answer1 doctor weighed in
Dr. Charles Cattano
Gastroenterology 39 years experience
How'd you get them?: "healing" depends on whether the original cause for hemorrhoids persists. Have you been straining at stool, have rectal dysfunction, perform an activity that increases pelvic engorgement with blood or increases pelvic pressure (heavy lifting, prolonged sitting, etc.)? Have your hemorrhoids been surgically or medically managed (& with otc or prescription drugs)? Too many variables here to know...

A 38-year-old female asked:

Do external hemorrhoids cause an odor?

2 doctor answers3 doctors weighed in
Dr. Nicole Basa
General Surgery 21 years experience
No: No they usually don't unless you have difficulty cleaning and there is residual stool that remains on the external hemorrhoid after each bm. I would recommend sitz baths after bms if you note an odor. If there continues to be an odor you may have a perianal abscess which would be accompanied by pain and pus drainage. For this you need to go to the er for treatment.

How can you treat external hemorrhoids?

Dr. Eric Kaplan
Colon and Rectal Surgery 42 years experience
No: You can never remove all of the external hemorrhoids even with surgery. What most people think are external hemorrhoids are actually residual benign skin tags from prior hemorrhoidal flares. I personally do not recommend witch hazel ever, as many people will develop a sensitivity reaction, like an allergic reaction, to it after repeated use.
A 42-year-old member asked:

Can external hemorrhoids get bigger?

1 doctor answer3 doctors weighed in
Dr. Mark Hoepfner
General Surgery 39 years experience
Yes: Hemorrhoids ate veins under the skin in the anal area. They become enlarged or irritated with constipation & sitting at the toilet straining too long. The veins can continue to enlarge with repeated irritation from constipation. Dink more water, eat more fiber (fruits & vegetables, metamucil).
A 43-year-old member asked:

How long is to long for external hemorrhoid to bleed?

Dr. Mark Hoepfner
General Surgery 39 years experience
Bleeding: From hemorrhoids can continue as long as they are not treated. Bleeding too long is several days of bleeding. Rectal bleeding needs to be evaluated by a doctor to be sure there is not something else causing the bleeding ; to develop a treatment plan.
