How do you keep a hemorrhoid from bursting open and leaking puss?

Don't: Henmorrhoids rarely get infected. If a swelling near the anus burst and discharges purulence it is more likely a rectal abscess and may have a fistula associated with it, which may require surgery to prevent recurrence. See a colon and rectal surgeon for evaluation.

Confused: Hemorrhoids do not typically get infected. They can swell and cause pain but that is from thrombosis of the hemorrhoid. You may be confusing hemorrhoids and perianal abscess which is an infection of the skin surrounding the anus. If this is caught very early antibiotics can successfully treat, but once an abscess if formed it usually needs to be drained surgically.
