A 24-year-old member asked:

how do you keep a hemorrhoid from bursting open and leaking puss?

Don't: Henmorrhoids rarely get infected. If a swelling near the anus burst and discharges purulence it is more likely a rectal abscess and may have a fistula associated with it, which may require surgery to prevent recurrence. See a colon and rectal surgeon for evaluation.

Confused: Hemorrhoids do not typically get infected. They can swell and cause pain but that is from thrombosis of the hemorrhoid. You may be confusing hemorrhoids and perianal abscess which is an infection of the skin surrounding the anus. If this is caught very early antibiotics can successfully treat, but once an abscess if formed it usually needs to be drained surgically.

Avoid constipation: Eat fresh whole foods, grains, vegetables, fruits. Drink 6-8 glasses of plain water a day in addition to any other beverages you may be consuming. Brisk walk daily, 30 mins at least. Have a warm glass of water first thing in the morning. Avoid more than 1-2 cups caffeine/day, processed foods, white flour, excess cheese. Maintain a regular and consistent routine for meal times.

Are there effective over-the-counter medication to reduce a hemorrhoid outbreak?

Depends: If you have a hemorrhoid problem and are helped by over the counter meds, you probably do not have a serious hemorrhoid problem. Prescription hemorrhoid meds help, but there is no substitute for proper dieet and fluid intake to treat or prevent hemorrhoid symptoms.

Yes: Everyone has 3 internal hemorrhoids and numerous external hemorrhoidal veins. Any combination can involve either/or both internal and external hemorrhoids. Please get it checked by a specialist if you have concerns.

Is it safe to use hemorrhoid medication even if you're unsure that it is a hemorrhoid?

Depends: Short term treatment is ok, but if they dont respond or keep recurring they should be thoroughly evaluated to be sure you have the correct diagnosis. Too many people self treat for years only to find out too late that they have been treating a rectal or anal cancer with hemorrhoid creams. They dont work for cancer!

What is the best hemorhoid treatment?

Short stay bathroom: Hemorrhoids are often caused by straining at he stool for prolonged times. The simple way to get rid of them is to not read magazines or similar activities while on the toilet. 1-2 minutes should be enough. If the hemorrhoids are caused by pregnancy, they should disappear or become asymptomatic after delivery. The main treatment is to avoid straining.
