A member asked:

Has anyone out there had a child go onto ecmo? for what reason?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

ECMO: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation can be thought of as a longer term cardiopulmonary bypass machine. Strict criteria has to be met before physicians (surgeons and icu) even consider placing a child on ecmo. These include reversible lung injury, no lethal malformations, no major untreatable cardiac malformation, and most importantly - failure of maximal medical therapy.
