Lifelong : Downs syndrome is a genetic condition caused by 3 copies of chromosome 21. Being a genetic condition, downs syndrome is a permanent condition. Many of the associated complications with downs syndrome can be fixed or managed with early intervention.

DS occurs when an extra chromosome is found in the nucleus of every cell in the persons body.That extra chromosome confuses the way the cells interpret the genetic information on how things work.DS individuals will always have it. The alteration in their lives will vary some as they age, but they can live a relatively healthy life well past 60.
