Genetic & Environmen: There are genetic factors that predispose to asthma. Exposure to smoke wither prenatally or as a child increase the risk. Certain infections provoke asthma. Those with allergies or an atopic history are more prone. Certain environmental exposures can trigger asthma, so much attention is now paid both to the indoor air quality as well as outdoor exposures such as ozone and other pollutants.

Family, allergies: A history of asthma in a parent or sibling, and allergies to inhaled allergens, smoking or exposure to environmental tobacco smoke are the main risk factors for the development of asthma. In an adult, a history of asthma in childhood would be a significant risk factor.
