A very old disease: In 2735 bc, shen nong, the yellow emperor, wrote about ephedra (ma huang) for respiratory diseases. Ephredrine, the drug purified from ephedra plants, was used to treat asthma until ~15 years ago. 100 years ago Atropine cigarettes were smoked to treat asthma. Atrovent (ipratropium) is a safer form of atropine. Theophylline, a caffeine relative, was in common use until 15 years ago. These drugs have side effects.
