911: They should seek medical attention immediately at the nearest emergency room. Most states have procedures whereby emergency room physicians can obtain immediate psychiatric consultations or hold patients who are an imminent danger to themselves until they can be admitted to acute psychiatric facilities. If a person is unwilling to seek help, most states also have provisions for protective custody.

Crisis Intervention: According to nimh, "if you have a family member or friend who is suicidal, do not leave him or her alone. Try to get the person to seek help immediately from an emergency room, physician, or mental health professional. Take seriously any comments about suicide or wishing to die." even if you don't believe he or she will attempt suicide, the person is clearly in distress and can benefit from help.
