Depression: Not necessarily. Suicide ideations or plans is one of the 8 criteria listed for major depression, but you need at least 5 out of the 8 for diagnosis.

No: While suicidal thoughts certainly lend support for a diagnosis of mdd, they are not a necessary feature.
