During processing: The salmonella usually comes from an infected individual involved in the processing. Anyone from the egg collector, the eye inspector and grader, the egg packer and the shipping agent as well as the personnel in the grocery store where you purchased the egg. Most of these are screened for this and infection actually is quite rare - but not impossible.
