Proper evaluation: Your surgeon and anesthesiologist will only recommend a general anesthetic for elective surgery if you are healthy enough to receive it. If you are over 50 years old you will have appropriate pre-op testing such as ekg and chest x-rays. Only then will the general anesthetic be used and consequently this procedure is quite safe.
