A 30-year-old member asked:

what is the current prognosis for cyclic vomiting syndrome?

2 doctor answers2 doctors weighed in

Prognosis?: Each person with cyclic vomiting syndrome has different triggers, different levels of severity, some with more and others less episodes, and some with other issues related to the cvs, or as a result. Some episodes are severe and may need IV fluids and other supportive care, others may become disabled from the syndrome. More studies, a clearer source will help treatments and prognosis.

Fair prognosis: If treated according to the standards of medical practice and in a timely fashion by the doctor, prognosis is good.Thanks.

What can I do for severe vomiting in the first trimester?

Dr. Jeff Livingston

Talk to doc: First trimester nausea and vomiting can be miserable. Some patients can control with this diet. Eat small amounts like crackers often to keep your stomach coated. Nausea is worse when your stomach is completely empty. Ginger has some natural effects on nausea so try sipping ginger ale. Take your prenatal vitamins at night before sleeping. Talk to your doc about medication options.

Is it normal for my baby to throw up after coughing?

Dr. Irwin Berkowitz

No: The most common cause of vomiting after coughing is gastroesophageal reflux. A persistent severe cough with vomiting after the cough could be a sign of whooping cough, a very dangerous illness especially in infants.

Do all babies throw up after coughing?

Dr. Kathleen Forcier

Yes: Infants and young children throw up after coughing so frequently that we have a medical term for it: post-tussive emesis. You don't need to see your doctor just because your child vomits a little bit of phlegm after coughing, but if you think he's having difficulty breathing, if he turns blue (not red) when coughing or if he passes out after coughing he definitely needs to be seen by a physician.
A member asked:

If theres blood in my babys vomit, should I take her to the emergency room?

Dr. Lisa Roberts
Pediatrics 23 years experience
Call your doc first: Depending on the age of your baby and what is going on, this may or may not be a medical emergency. In the first few days after birth, it is not uncommon for babies to swallow maternal blood from fissures in the breast. If your breasts are cracked, it could be due to that. Your doctor can help you with that. If there is fever, large amounts of blood in the vomit, severe pain, the er might be best.

A 34-year-old member asked:

What are other alternative medicine treatments to help reduce nausea and vomiting?

2 doctor answers9 doctors weighed in
Dr. Jay Goldberg
Emergency Medicine 26 years experience
Citrus/Ginger: Remedies other than traditional medicines include foods, pressure points and some vitamins. Ginger has been shown to aid in the relief of nausea as has both the taste and aroma of citrus fruits. Wrist bands used for sea sickness and accupuncture have also provided relief for some. Last, 25 mg of vitamin B6 taken 3-4 times a day may help with nausea and vomiting as well.

adding 1/2 or 1 tab of doxylamine (sold OTC as Unisom) to the B6 is safe and effective, too
