What are tests for severe back pain?

X-ray/MRI: X-rays and mris are often done in conjunction with a physical exam to determine the cause of back pain. However, these are usually not needed early on in care. Certain symptoms may indicate the need for imaging to be done sooner. Nerve studies may also be helpful.

Relative: "severe low back pain" of spontaneous onset absent trauma then consider renal stone & go to E.R. If fever go to E.R. To rule out urinary tract infection. With mechanical trauma need to obtain radiographic images. Acute strain/sprains need evaluation by osteopath. If muscle spasm treat with rest, heat, massage, physical therapy, aquatherapy, and acupuncture.
