Unstable fractures: A fracture of the neck can vary in severity. Mild fractures may only need observation and severe fractures are often fatal. Unstable fractures require stabilization which may mean a cervical collar, a halo or surgery. Typically unstable fractures of the upper cervical spine are difficult to stabilize in a collar and are more commonly treated with a halo.
