Let pain guide you: If you twisted your ankle and it has minimal pain and swelling, you just need to be ginger with it until the ligaments heal. If the pain is on a bone and not in the soft tissues below the ankle, it may require an xray. Your description of your injury is likely a sprain, not requiring an er visit. Rest, ice, compression. Elevation. Ibuprofen for good measure if painful.

If it is swollen: And/or black and blue, it can be worth it to go to the er or a local podiatrist to have it examined.
