Story of 1960s: Premature infants who were exposed to excessive oxygen exhibited retinal damage called retrolental fibrodysplagia, leading even to blindness. Since 1970s, monitoring of blood oxygen level has been a standard procedure whenever infant received extra oxygen. However, some premature infants especially extreme preemies continue to develop same complication today, known as retinopathy of prematurity.
