Controversial : Great question! experts do not agree. The american society for reproductive medicine recommends that fertility treatment be limited to women age 50 or less unless she is participating in a research study. Risks do appear to increase with age although women over 50 can have a healthy pregnancy. Other issues are possible psychosocial impact upon the children.

When futile: Asrm recommends no treatment when futile (less than 1% success). Futile is a bit subjective but most know it when we see it :) sometimes a compassion cycle is warranted with psych counseling. Goal is compassion by realistic, accurate advise when treatment will not work. Donor egg/sperm, adoption, child-free living are all appropriate choices. Hope this info helps. Best wishes.
