Septic shock: Septic shock is a form of shock caused by an infectious organism. Typically, this is a bacteria (and there are a variety of these), and a person's susceptibility to these may be influenced by co-morbid medical problems like diabetes. Fungal organisms also cause sepsis, and viruses produce a sepsis syndrome as well. There are other causes of shock that mimic sepsis.
