Lumbar Puncture: Though the history can be similar- the profile on the lumbar puncture usually will aallow differentiation.

Cerebrospinal fluid: CSF analysis will distinguish between bacterial and viral causes. Also CSF cultures most probably will be positive in bacterial cultures.
