A member asked:

Do i still need a meningitis vaccine after having meningitis? i know that the vaccines cover bacterial, while i had viral ( final dx was viral meningoencephalitis). i had asked my doctor who said i don't, but i feel as though i still do?

The main concern would be epidemic meningococcal meningitis, which periodically erupts. Under those circumstances, the vaccine would indeed be appropriate.

The vaccinations per AAP and other guidelines for your age should be followed, if not otherwise contraindicated. The meningococcal vaccination is important and if you have the Pediatric records, you may have had the vaccinations already. A Healthtap consult may be helpful.
