Why is hospice located in skilled nursing facilities?

Outside too: Hospice can be on an outpatient basis. Skilled nursing home facilities also have hospice, they have couple more benefits like a sitter most of the day , pain medication regulation etc. Really not much of difference.

High level needs: Hospice is extremely useful in skilled nursing facilities for patients who have a high symptom burden and cannot be managed at home or do not have a home or home caregivers that allow for this. Hospice clinicians are specially trained to deal with symptoms and generally add expertise to the staff at skilled nursing facilities because the patient will get extra attention.

Agree with Dr. Back: Many hospitals now are discouraging hospice on site. Some families aren't equipped to manage their loved ones at home on hospice without help and unable to hire help, therefore hospice in a skilled nursing facility is a good option. There is usually an rn present, at the least an lvn and the hospice team is usually on-call after hours and can make visits if needed in addition to routine visits.
