Length of training: Generally, the difference would be length of training program. A family practice physician takes a 3 year residency that includes internal medicine, ob-gyn, surgery, emergency medicine, pediatrics, psychiatry, neurology, and of course family medicine as well as elective subspecialty rotations. A general practice physician can get his or her license after a 1 year, usually rotating, internship.
