Events affecting the maternal blood vessels and kidneys activate the platelets to be consumed resulting in this clinical model. The liver and kidneys swell to the point of failure.

Severe preeclampsia.: Hellp syndrome is an extreme form of severe pree; it is due to widespread endothelial dysfunction (vessel lining) induced by the ailing placenta and does not improve before delivery of the fetus(es) and placenta.
