LOCAL ANESTHESIA: Usually, a surgeon will inject local anesthetic to numb the skin before making an incision for surgery so you have less pain. A pain pump contains local anesthetic that is slowly, continuously pumped in by pressure thru a little tube to hopefully decrease the pain in the area of the surgery. It often is helpful to decrease the amount of oral pain medicine you need after surgery.
