The leptin is unable to produce its normal effects of weight loss, with the severity correlating with the degree of obesity.

Leptin and weight: There are two major gut hormones involved in weight control. Ghrelin and leptin. They are opposites. High ghrelin levels make you hungry, and high leptin levels make you feel full. That is a very broad generalization but you get the idea. If one is high, the other is usually low. And abnormality of either hormone could theoretically lead to weight gain.
