What might make someone develop an allergy to shellfish later in life?

Unknown: Many people (at least half) develop shellfish allergy later in life. This probably reflects the way the immune system develops, as some allergies are more common in very young children than adults (like egg), while others develop later (like pollen, and shellfish). The exact mechanism is still unknown though.

Many dogs few tricks: Many foods can trigger allergic reactions, even life-endangering anaphylaxis but those reactions have a limited number of symptoms - hives, lip, tongue & eyelid swelling, coughing, suffocation, nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, a sense of something bad is happening, loss of consciousness & shock. If a some of these symptoms occur within 2 hours of eating shellfish allergy is possible.

What can help my allergy to shellfish?

Avoid & epinephrine: No one can cure your shellfish allergy so staying away from it is the best course of action. Those allergic to crustaceans may not be allergic to mollusks & vice versa so you might be able to eat some shellfish. See your allergist for testing & advice. A reaction to shellfish can occur in minutes. Antihistamines work in an hour. Epipen (epinephrine) injected into your thigh can be life-saving. Where's yours?
